Over the past twelve weeks, my participation in the Earn to Upgrade program has significantly transformed the way I view business management and decision-making. One of the most practical applications of this learning has been in the management of my agro-processed product business, which I launched in May.
As part of my business operations, I maintained a ledger to track my transactions and monitor the financial performance of the business. After completing my second production cycle, I used digital tools to analyze my records and discovered two important issues: my ledger was not properly balanced, and my second production cycle was operating at a loss. While this realization was initially concerning, it became an important learning opportunity.
Before this course, I might have focused only on sales and production without paying close attention to financial records and cost analysis. However, the knowledge gained during the program helped me understand the importance of accurate bookkeeping, financial tracking, and data-driven decision-making. Rather than ignoring the discrepancies, I was able to identify gaps in my record-keeping and recognize the need to review all transactions carefully to ensure that every expense and income item was correctly captured.
The discovery of a loss in my second production cycle also highlighted the importance of cost management and profitability analysis. Using concepts learned throughout the course, I can now examine my production costs, identify areas where expenses may have exceeded expectations, evaluate pricing strategies, and determine how to improve efficiency in future production cycles. This process has shown me that profitability is not determined by sales alone but by understanding the relationship between revenue, costs, and operational efficiency.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that business challenges are not failures but sources of valuable information. The imbalance in my ledger and the loss recorded in production have provided insights that will help me strengthen my financial management practices and make more informed business decisions moving forward.
As I continue to grow my agro-processing business, I am confident that the skills acquired through the Earn to Upgrade program including financial record keeping, business analysis, problem-solving, and the use of digital tools will help me build a more sustainable and profitable enterprise. This experience has reinforced the importance of continuous learning, accurate record management, and using evidence-based insights to drive business growth. -
