Workplace Communication
Course Overview
This Alison certificate course covers the full range of workplace communication skills: answering interview questions, speaking up in meetings, delivering criticism constructively, listening effectively, speaking assertively, giving presentations (team, sales, and formal), and navigating difficult professional conversations. It is built around the premise that communication is not just about what you say — it is about how confidently and appropriately you say it in each specific workplace situation.
The course is practical rather than theoretical. Each section addresses a specific scenario participants are likely to encounter in remote work and professional settings — from the first interview to day-to-day team interactions. For women who have not had formal exposure to professional communication norms, this course fills the gap between knowing what to say and knowing how to say it in a way that lands.
Why This Course for Week 3
Week 3 focuses on digital communication and reporting. The Part A courses cover writing mechanics — grammar, structure, email format. This course handles the human dimension: how to be heard in a meeting, how to give feedback without damaging relationships, how to listen in a way that builds trust, and how to present ideas without being undermined by nerves.
For Bridge Program participants heading toward Mpowa internships, the assertive communication module is particularly important. The ECA framework identified that many participants carry a pattern of compliance without engagement — going through the motions but not expressing their actual thoughts or needs. This course teaches the alternative: how to communicate assertively without aggression, how to advocate for yourself while maintaining professional relationships.
