Course Overview
This Alison certificate course teaches the fundamentals of customer service: understanding client expectations, improving their experience, handling complaints constructively, managing stress in client-facing interactions, and building the communication habits that turn one-time contacts into lasting professional relationships. The course recognises that people’s perceptions of a brand are defined by their experience of the people who represent it — making customer service one of the most consequential professional skills.
The course covers both face-to-face and telephone interactions, complaint escalation and resolution, and the emotional discipline required to remain professional under pressure. For women transitioning into remote work, these same principles apply to email, chat, and video call interactions — the channel changes, but the skill of managing another person’s experience remains the same.
Why This Course for Week 7
Week 7 is the final skills week before the practical project. Client and community management is the capstone skill — it brings together everything participants have learned: communication (Week 3), resilience under pressure (Week 2), problem-solving (Week 4), administrative accuracy (Week 5), and professional presentation (Week 6). Managing a client or community relationship requires all of these simultaneously.
For participants entering Mpowa internships, client-facing skills are essential. AI training roles, documentation tasks, and support positions all involve interacting with stakeholders who have expectations, feedback, and sometimes frustrations. The woman who can handle these interactions with professionalism, empathy, and structured problem-solving is the one who builds trust — both for herself and for the organisations she represents.
This course replaces the originally planned HubSpot Academy course. While HubSpot’s certification is excellent, the platform requires account creation and navigation that presented access barriers for some participants. Moving Week 7 to Alison keeps the learning experience on a platform participants already know and trust, removing friction at a point in the programme where cognitive load is already high.
